寺嶋民哉
Composer/Arranger / Music Producer
Executive Director, Public Relations Manager, Planning Manager of JCAA (Japan Composers and Arrangers Association)/ Arranging Examiner for JASRAC/ Kumamoto City Goodwill Ambassador.
Terashima was inspired to pursue music through his trumpet performances in a wind ensemble, where he demonstrated his arranging talent from an early age. During his student years, he arranged music for wind ensembles and small chamber groups, and he participated in the national finals of the Popular Song Contest three times, showcasing his exceptional musical sense.
After moving to Tokyo in 1991, he dedicated himself to composing full-time, producing numerous successful works, particularly in film music. His unique musical style and rich expressiveness have earned him high praise in the fields of film, television, and stage music. Notably, his score for the film Half a Confession won the Japan Academy Prize for Excellent Music. He also composed the music for Studio Ghibli’s Tales from Earthsea, establishing himself as one of Japan’s leading composers for film music.
In 2009, he produced the film music concert CinemaTrack TRICK TRIP TRAP for JCAA (Japan Composers and Arrangers Association), which marked his entry into conducting orchestras. He continues to explore the fusion of classical music and film scores, pursuing new expressive possibilities.
Additionally, Terashima has worked on many musical theater productions, and in recent years, has ventured into more classical compositions, such as the opera Kurenai Tennyo—originally a fictional play within the manga Glass Mask by Suzue Miuchi, which was later officially staged as an opera. Glass Mask is a long-running shōjo manga that follows the struggles and growth of Maya Kitajima, a young and talented actress, as she competes for the legendary role of Kurenai Tennyo, depicting the intense world of theater. He has also composed the symphony So. Terashima has also sound-produced for artists such as Kanae Nozawa, Shaylee Mary, Koji Hishimoto, and Yumi Ikema, attempting to merge folk music, pop, and orchestral sounds, thus expanding his diverse musical expressions.
With a unique sense of color and deep musicality, Terashima continues to create innovative music across a wide range of fields, including film, theater, and classical music, leveraging his solid technical foundation and rich sensibility.
